The best career decisions involve using your brain

Change can be good, but it can also feel bad.

Partly because our brain is trained to favour familiarity and when we introduce any change of routine into our lives, our brains become uncertain and immediately consider alterations as possible threats.

When someone wants to make a career change, the brain manages every step of the journey evaluating every part of the whole process!

As recruiters, in our quest to find the perfect candidate for our client, we need to take into consideration different factors: consequences, needs, previous experiences and environment.

1. Consequences

The most important thing when making a decision is to have a clear image of the consequences of the choice.

Indeed, our brain has a predictive system that constantly generating predictions of events, in order to compare those predictions with reality especially when we are required to make a decision. The discrepancy between the predictive and the real event results in a variance. The smaller the variance is the easier it is to take make a decision.

We must therefore make our job offers and the information to support them extremely clear and detailed.

2. Needs

Our brain bases every decision on its capability to satisfy values and needs, key motivators for everyone, with the minimum loss.

That is why we need to highlight what the candidate is looking for and match it as closely as possible to the job description.

3. Previous experiences

Our brain makes decisions based on the outcome of previous experiences.

When we are facing a specific situation, we will most likely call upon the experience of positive or negative past experiences. Therefore our ability to understand that positive or negative feelings play a significant part in the decision making process.

That is why we need to dig into our candidates’ previous experiences.

4. Environment

People’s internal state is as important as their external state; therefore, another factor that can influence people's decisions, is how and if they feel physically comfortable.

Eyes are the only part of the brain that can be seen directly; they work as a camera and transfer information along the optic nerve to the brain.

That is why it is extremely important to create a comfortable and relaxed environment to support the decision making process.

At Cooper Lomaz we take pride in being genuinely interested in what our candidates have to say and to find the right opportunities for them. Our candidates provide us great testimonials saying we don’t see them as another tick in the box, job done, commissions earned and move on to the next role. We help our candidates’ brains making the right decision.
