The importance of getting a good night's sleep

Published date: March 30, 2020

Our biological system needs three main activities to work at its best: good eating habits, exercise and a good night of sleep.

Sounds easy, right? But more recently, many feel like  society is looking at sleep as a form of luxury or as a losing of our precious time. As a result, we are becoming more and more dependent on caffeine or other substitutes.

Being exhausted and chronically tired harms our physical and mental health. Moreover, it threatens our relationships as we become more impulsive, we lack empathy and we fail to see social signals from people around us.

There are different causes to blame for our lack of sleep.

One of the main factors has been the boom in electronics. Using them from home increases our time spent working and entertaining ourselves when we should relax and get ready to have a good night of sleep.

Another big factor is that we live in a 24/7 society which is seeing a rising number of night-shift employees. Our bodies are simply not adjusting to it.

Some of us might not know that when we sleep our memories get consolidated and a tired brain imprints negative rather than positive experiences, increasing stress in people.

Higher stress rises frustration, decreases self-esteem and builds anxiety and depression.

Also, stress hormones in the body, such as cortisol, cause inflammatory skin conditions.

Chronically tired people have an increased chance of illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer; changes in metabolism and in particular higher level of ghrelin, the “hunger” hormone.

A good night of sleep helps to replenish thinner collagen fibrils which form our body tissues; it affects positively both moisture and PH levels of our skin fighting dryness and dehydration.

We have fewer wrinkles, a better blood flow, fewer bags under our eyes, healthier hair and our mouth corners don’t dropdown.

Relaxed, healthier, prettier and happier… Just with a good quality night of sleep!

Even with a rise in work-life balance, we work in a 24/7, target and deadlines driven industry.

Recruiters choose to work longer hours for a variety of reasons such as financial rewards and the demands related to reaching both clients andcandidates.  Therefore, a proactive approach to Health & Wellbeing is vital.
