Tackling change and new jobseeker trends you must be aware of

Published date: February 3, 2022

Changes to working life over the past two years have led many people to re-evaluate their careers. For some, working from home has been freeing and they want to continue to do so. For others, remote working has left them feeling isolated and unfulfilled. Many others have been placed onto lengthy furlough schemes which may have ended in redundancy.

Wherever you might fall on this spectrum the past two years have changed how we think about work and what we want out of life.

At the same time, the pandemic has meant changing jobs has felt like a risky move. But that uncertainty is lifting. Over 69% of workers say that they are now feeling confident about making that change.

For those considering changing jobs or who are getting back into full-time work after furlough, there are some key trends job seekers should be aware of.

Five jobseeker trends to be aware of

  1. Remote hiring is here to stay It’s easy to think that post pandemic job searches will mean a return to an in-person hiring process. However, thanks to video conferencing technology, remote interviewing is here to stay, and employers are expanding their tech usage to virtual events, office tours and onboarding. This means selling yourself virtually is more important than ever. Test your setup, find an ideal location, and practice your video interview technique in advance.
  1. Remote working jobs are the new normal 85% of UK workers say that they want to see a hybrid approach to work which incorporates both the office and remote working. Job seekers are increasingly looking for roles that offer them a level of flexibility and employers are responding to attract and retain the best talent. This is excellent news for diversity and inclusion in the workplace. Flexibility helps parents and carers balance work and responsibilities, reduces the gender pay gap and allows employees with chronic health conditions to stay in work. Knowing what form of hybrid working is right for you will help you find the role that fits you best.
  1. Continuous learning gives your CV a boost Using your free time to work on personal development and upskilling will make you a more attractive prospect in an increasingly competitive market. Formal qualifications and proof of experience are no longer enough.

To blow employers out of the water you need to show that you are committed to improving your skills independently as well as at work.

  1. Company culture and employer brand is as important as benefits Job seekers have always been attracted to the additional benefits an employer can offer. Traditionally that has been focused on remuneration, assistance with the costs of commuting and in-office perks such as snacks, gyms or even games. But employees are increasingly focused on how the businesses they work for reflect their own morals and values and provide a supportive work culture. Businesses are shifting their focus in their job adverts to show that they provide a welcoming, satisfying place to work, investing in your future development.  That demonstration of an alignment of values from both the employer’s perspective and yours has become a high priority.
  1. Soft skills are powerful skills Employers are putting greater value on soft skills such as adaptability, communication, innovation, problem-solving and time management. All skills that make working in the new hybrid environment more efficient and effective. Demonstrating these soft skills in your CV is as important as showing your formal experience or technical expertise. Can you find ways to show how you have developed and used these skills in your previous roles on your CV?
