Pay increased by 1.7% in the three months leading up to November, according to the ONS. This is the first time since 2010 that salaries have increased for two consecutive months.

The ONS release also reported that the percentage of people in work (aged 16-64) was 73% for the quarter to November, up from 72% the year-on-year. Additionally, unemployment stood at 5.8%, down from the 2013 mark of 7.1%.

Wage growth was promising across most industry sectors, with Information and Communication markets reporting single month growth of 1.7%, Finance and Insurance at 6.9%, and Electricity, Gas and Water Supply posted growth of 3.3%.

The UK Manufacturing industry posted varying figures, with Food and Tobacco Manufacturing contracting by 2.5%, while Basic Metal Manufacturing and Engineering increased by 2.5% and 2.2% respectively.
